The 733 series is a suburban AC train that was introduced in 2012, and is based on the previously introduced 731 series, with the introduction of new technology and specifications that support barrier-free access. The 733-3000 series was introduced in 2014 with the aim of easing congestion during rush hour and improving the comfort of the "Airport" rapid train. The "Airport" rapid train using this series began operating mainly between New Chitose Airport and SapporoOtaru in July 2014.
